The year of Bicentenary

On September 18, 2010 Chile celebrated its 200 years of republican life. This date is a symbolic milestone in our history because it was the beginning of the process that would lead us to be an independent nation. Chile's Bicentennial is an important date, because we can celebrate who we are as a nation and what we have achieved in these two hundred years. Also is a crucial moment to reflect on what we did right and what must change and improve in the coming years.
Despite all the important and beautiful it is celebrating 200 years of independence of our country, this year there have been a lot of events undoubtedly have marked the history of our country, either positively or negatively. Starting from the earthquake that shook the whole country and the world, one of the largest disasters in the history of our country. The earthquake occurred at 3:34:17, on Saturday February 27, 2010, it reached a magnitude of 8.8. The epicenter was located in the Chilean Sea, opposite the towns of Cobquecura Curanipe and about 150 miles northwest of Concepción and 63 miles southwest of Cauquenes, and 47.4 miles beneath the earth's crust. The areas most affected by the earthquake were the Chilean regions of Valparaíso, Metropolitana de Santiago, O'Higgins, Maule, Bío Bío and La Araucanía, who accumulate more than 13 million people, about 80% of the population. As a result of the earthquake, the same happened on February 27 a strong tsunami that struck our coast, destroying several villages. This disaster certainly marked the history of our country, because apart from being regarded as the second strongest in the country's history and one of the five strongest recorded by mankind, the number of people who lost their property or more important even their own lives is a fact that undoubtedly will not forget in a long time and marked in 2010.
However, not everything was bad in 2010, because this year a situation that seemed to be another tragedy became one of the positive things this year, as was the successful rescue of 33 miners who were trapped in the mine under earth. This situation thanks to the efforts of many people and hope and strength of families and the miners themselves, had a happy ending and could contribute to the pretty face of this year's bicentennial.
From this analysis and to end is important to remember that the bicentenary offers us a unique opportunity to be proud of who we are, and dream of the country we want to build for future generations as well as being a time of celebration, togetherness, reflection and projection into the future and despite all adverse events that occurred, it is important that each of us can help us to have a world and a better country, starting every one of us to build a better future.

Myths and truths about the human brain...

Hi to everyone! Today I will talk about the Doctor Pedro Maldonado’s presentation, and specificly about the “myths and truths about the human brain”.
Well, for starters it is important to mention that the "human brain" is a complex issue, but also wonderfully interesting, because it is the structure of the body that governs all our behavior, including our emotions, for this reason that the human brain is full of myths about which Dr. Pedro Maldonado spoke and clarified in his interesting talk.
Among the myths that Dr. Maldonado said is the "Size and shape of the brain", this issue is very interesting because when compare the human brain with that of other species, are impressive both differences and similarities in the structure and size this structure, for example, the animal that is more like the brain to us humans is the "chimp" and on the opposite side, we find a staggering difference in the convolutions, size, shape, etc., which has an animal as small as squirrels, which have a very small brain, poor convolutions, which realizes the regarding the complexity of functions performed by agencies related to the characteristics of the brain of each species.
Another controversial issue about the brain, is the comparison made of this structure with a computer. Although this myth has been useful in cognitive psychology, neuro sciences research. Cognitive has revealed many important differences between the brains and computers, these differences could be crucial for understand the neural mechanisms of information processing that certainly is much more complex than a computer.
Well finally, it is important to note that the brain is a complex issue and actually engaging, as well as having important for all of us, knowledge of its early development and its functions are essential for understanding many of our behaviors and impressed by how amazing it is the perfection of this structure.

Should we be worried about early puberty?

Hi to everyone! Today I will comment on an article in the online newspaper "The Guardian", the article is named "Should we be worried about aerly puberty?" (http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/oct/19/worried-about-early-puberty).
The article starts talking about a girl, Hannah, who recently turned 8 years old, and his mother feel shocked because she already shows signs of being in puberty (such as the development of the nipples) ecnuentra which she very early, compared to their situation, unlike what has her daughter, she did not show signs of puberty at an early age.
Along with this case, the paper presents other situations in which demonstrates the acceleration of the onset of puberty in children, especially girls the women, where their first menstrual period, which usually occurs long before now than it was in times past. This is evidenced by speaking of figures, since the author mentions that the average age at onset of puberty is 10.75 years in girls and 11.5 years for males (the first sign for children is the enlargement of the testicles).
Within it an important factor mentioned by the author is currently a tendency to obesity and overweight, which advances the age of puberty, in part because the hormonal changes that start are triggered by the body of a children reach a certain size. "It is very likely that there is a link with the body weight increases, but the data is just beginning to show that," says Hindmarsh. "It makes sense, though. In an era of abundance, a species that always has a great interest in self-preservation tends to reproduce quickly."
Other factors mentioned in the article, are the ratio of the advancement of puberty with the "lack of parental presence, since, according to studies, this situation acts as a signal to the brain of pre-teen girls, triggering the hormonal changes that allow it to reproduce.

The increase in female sex hormones come at a time when your brain is not ready. Children at this age usually are in a stage of childhood where they are in the fantasy game, and changes in the brain that are activated at puberty are all about reality and understand that actions have consequences in the long term . This situation becomes very confusing for young children and as the author relates to the tendency to withdraw and other personality disorders that are directly related to how children cope with this new, accelerated phase, which involves many changes, as it moves from being just a child, to live the series of events and changes which means the transition to puberty.

To end the article talks about recent studies that link early puberty to a greater risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and heart disease in adulthood. This situation is certainly alarming to us because it increases the rate of those diseases and predisposes to many people because of the advancement of this vital process to be "ill adults".

Dealing with stress...

Hi to everyone! the topic of today is "dealing with stress”.
Well, for starters I will talk about the Meaning of the "stress" concept, the stress "is a Psychological or physical demand out of the usual, causing a state
anxious in the body."
Among the triggers of stress, can be mentioned various stimuli, either internal or external, directly or indirectly determines an alteration in the dynamic equilibrium of the body.
Based on the above, the main causes of stress can be classified in:
-Physiological: These causes are related to disease and injury the body that increase the tension inside the person producing a level stress that it becomes counterproductive to oneself.
-Psychological: relates to emotional and cognitive vulnerability. Life crises by changes: childhood, adolescence, maturity, old age.Conflicting or inadequate interpersonal relationships. Terms frustrating to work or study: excessive demand or competitiveness, monotony, inconsistent standards, career dissatisfaction, etc.
-Social: Social change in which each era brings new challenges face.
-Environmental: environmental pollution, food toxic denatured industrial workplaces with little security or charge electrostatic pathogens, natural disasters, etc.
As stress symptoms the most common are: tightness chest, sweating in the palms, palpitations, difficulty swallowing or breathing, body tremors, cold hands and feet, muscle tension, lack or increased appetite, restlessness, nervousness, anxiety, etc.
In the aftermath of stress we can find some that are very common, and certainly all have felt ever due to some situation, these are fatigue, exhaustion, headaches, tension neck, moodiness and therefore problems in the relationship with others etc.
There are many people in the world who suffer from stress, as it is a serious condition especially common in today, because we live in a world very agitated that predisposes us to be people more stressed and therefore suffer the unpleasant consequences of stress.
In my point view the best way is trying to cope with stress take the time to do different things, not just devote 100% to something if not try to distract doing recreational activities or out of the daily routine.

LEVONORGESTREL

Hi to everyone one more time! in this time I will talk about the LEVONORGESTREL, considering Dr. Carlos Valenzuela's speech.
Well, for starters I will talk about how important was the presentation of Dr. Carlos Valenzuela. In my view this presentation is of great importance to our professional training and for the important data delivered, but it is also important for the reason that we can have an informed view.
Certainly with the Doctor Valenzuela's speech I could understand better his inestigation about the LEVONORGESTREL, as clarified many points and was very educational for explaining how he carried out his work in defense of his hypothesis about the controversial LEVONORGESTREL,also he was very helpful the graphics used statistics to more clearly explain the issue.
The "LEVONORGESTREL" is an emergency contraceptive of very controversial use, known by most people as "day-after pill" and as previously mentioned its use is very controversial, as there are people who consider that is a pill abortive and others not consider an abortive method. From the point of view of Dr. Valenzuela "LEVONORGESTREL" is not an abortive method, because It not affects the implantation of the conceptus in the uterus, and it has effect on the follicle. This drug is used after having sexual relation , seeking to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.
In my point of view, the "abortion" is the termination of pregnancy causing the death of the product of pregnancy, altering the process, whether natural or artificial way, since the embryo has life from my point of view, since the male sperm unites with the female egg (union of gametes). On the other hand an "ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy complication in which the product of fertilization takes place in different tissues of the uterus, either in the oviducts (more often) in the ovary, cervix or pelvic or abdominal cavity.
As for the terms "Contraceptive" and "Anticontraceptive" I believe that there are two terms that refer to the same, since both are related to prevent conception.
Finally, from my point of view the use of "LEVONORGESTREL" must be highly regulated, because this drug is very useful for extreme cases such as rape, however, must be restraint in its use, the effects and also because controversy has idiológica that the use of this pill has.

The book "Mi planta de naranja lima"

Hi to everyone one more time! in this time I will talk about a book that I read some time ago, this book is called "Mi planta naranja lima".
Well, for starters I will write about the reason because I like this book so much. "My orange lime plant" ("Mi planta naranja lima") is one of the few books that has managed to captivate my attention and one this is because the book is written from the point of view of a child, so full of innocence and emotions, however, context is very realistic and this makes you get involved in the story easily.
I read this book about two years ago, when I was in school, because a teacher of language on my school recommended me the book.
Why read it? Well, this book should be read because besides being a book that has a simple reading, has a beautiful teaching of life and achieves excite to tears, I'm sure that anyone who read this book, would rescue something nice about it.
The aspects that I found interesting of this book, are among other, the fantasy and ingenuity with which "Zeze," a child of five years, protagonist of the book, recounts his adventures, naivete that remains intact even though his life is very difficult, and also his life have many traumatic things and events such as suicide and violence.
Finally I can only say that it is a fascinating book, so if you have the opportunity to read it, do it !, because I assure you will not regret.

About my experience with the blog actitity...

Hi all!, today i'm going to talk about my experience with the blog activity.
Well, for starters I will talk about my most common mistakes, which were mainly the use of auxiliaries to construct sentences, and grammatical forms.

With this activity I could learn a lot, especially learning new words, because the blogs do was to know how many words I did not know before, and learn from my mistakes and having a wider knowledge of the English language.

The topics of the blogs were most closely related to our careers and our professional work, which allowed me person learns English well, think more about what I will do in the future and other issues related to my career. However, I would have liked that issues of free choice or the stories were more than once, to make the activity more dynamic.

A good point is that I have to learn to communicate and post to my classroom.
I think that the advantages of doing the blog were that learn to using the technology and to communicating with other persons across the net.

well, finally, in general I liked this new experience with blogs and technology and the dinamic of the activity.

My ideal job...

Hi all! today I´m going to talk about my ideal work and in this time I want to tell something other than what I wrote in the previous blog, about my "dream job" to talk more about my option to work with alternative medicine....
To start I tell you that my really ideal job would be have a place where I could apply the alternative medicine in the childbird and the pregnant process to help to mother, her baby and her family.
The reason because I will want to apply the medicine alternative in my profession is because I often think this a really interesting way to change the vision of the childbird and the general use of the medicine.
Well, it is clear that a lot can happen between now and the end of the race and my vision may change, and also I have to learn about how I can make more natural the process, all this during the years that I study.
Also, I would like to learn from other cultures, for example Mapuche culture, in order to complement knowledge and apply in my future work as a professional to have a broader visions of what I can do as a midwife.
The difficult part of this history is to get money to open my "alternative center", for this reason, To get money, before I have to work in something related with my carreer and also gain experience and wisdom.
I will like also do a post-title in neonathology, in university of Chile, because I really like it and I have the disposition and the effort to do many things.
To finish I hope that my ideal job can help people because it is my vocation and I love what I'll do in the future.

My free time...

Hi all! Today i’m going to talk about my free time.

Well, for starters I'll tell you that since I entered university my free time is very few, however, the few free time that I have, I try to take advantage of the best way possible, doing things that I like do, things that relax me and that make me forget the stress and all the things that I do for university.

Among the things that more I enjoy doing in my free time is stay with my friends and take advantage of that time with them the more possible.

In the university I became very good friends, and it's nice to share with them because they help me to distraction and spend pleasant moments that I enjoy. However, I miss so much my friends who are not in my university, because it's very little that I see them and really I would like to see them more often and that we can do many things as in the summer when we all have free time :)

Recently the "free time" has been an issue for me, especially because I realized that I stopped doing many things that were previously handled by the short time I have. That is why I look forward to vacation, especially to see the people that miss.

Education and Prevention in my Profession...

Hi! Today I'm going to talk about education and prevention in my profession.
To begin, I will discuss health issues in education, is an example of education on nutrition, which in my profession is important to promote proper feeding for people, especially women during pregnancy, to prevent complications for the fetus and for their personal welfare.

The prevention of adverse situations that may affect health is really important and also to emphasize the risk factors for developing various diseases and disorders that impair the well-being of the persons. An example of midwives related to ways of prevention is "prenatal control", where are seeks to prevent complications during pregnancy to promote maternal and fetal health, in this control are including the maternal education in various aspects for example breastfeeding and the importance that this have for the proper food of the future baby.

As midwives the education that we make is focused mainly on women, however, as health professionals our role is educate the entire community to promote good health and prevent diseases, such as sexually transmitted diseases, educating to the population sexually active about methods to prevent this diseases.

Finally, it is important to note that especially in Chile, despite having many tools to learn, has a major flaw in health care, a clear example is the high rate of obesity in our country. For these reasons we emphasize educating to the persons about how to lead a healthy life and thus be able to prevent both obesity and others various situations, that in the case of our work as midwives especially affects pregnant patients because they are exposes to risk to affect to the new life to come in way and also her health.

Gender role in health care...

Actually, both in the area of health, and society in general, the differences between the genders, have been declining, largely because women entered the labor area. It is for this reason that when talking about the role of women in health care, it is increasingly common for women to form an important and essential part in different functions which were previously excluded.

In the case of the tasks carried out by women or men midwives in health care, there is no great difference between both, beyond the quantitative difference, ie, that clearly there are more women than men midwives , because is a career in which the main responsibilities are related care of women in the reproductive process, including pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care in addition to newborns.

I'm not aware if the midwives man have a bigger salary than women, however, I have understood that the man are most requested, the reason, I have not very clear, but some believed the man is more delicate with woman patient, however,in my opinion this is very general and subjective, and relate it more than men to be lower are most requested.

Within the health team, consider that as midwives, both men and women, have a similar and equitable development, unlike other professionals such as doctors, where women and men if they have differences, being the reverse case what happens with midwives, because they have more professional men than women, even though the woman is as capable as men, some medical specialties, such as cardiology, proportion of men and women is very uneven, where the mayority is man.

My future as a midwife...

Hi :) , today i'm going to talk about my future as a midwife. I'll begin telling you that I love my career, and that most important of my future job is that I can feel happy with who I will do.

In the future when a midwife, I would like to work at a hospital in the area of the neonatology and emergency childbird.

The most ambitious option I have, to unlike the previous two, would be to open a maternity, in which include innovative alternatives to the process of childbirth and puerperium, to benefit to the woman and her baby, and also for considering and include to the family.

The field that I want to give more emphasis to public health as it is here where people are most in need and with few resources, that is why as a future midwife, my goal is to provide a dignified and quality , doing my job as best as possible and above all with love and dedication.

As I mentioned above and in other blogs, I would like to specialize in neonatology, mainly because I love babies and I want to be a complete professional. Besides this not rule out the possibility of studying something related to alternative medicine that can be applied to obstetrics, although these two issues are very different, want I will be able to be complete and comprehensive professional.

Finally, I would love to be a comprehensive and good profesional, and for my the most important is be what I always dreamed, and be happy doing what I do.

My career and my favorite subject...

Hi ! today I going to talk about my favorite subject, that is Anatomy.

From my point of view the relevance of anatomy in my future career is essential, because it includes many contents that we must know, as well as general knowledge to apply them to our future work as midwives. Also, is very important know well each of the parts of the body, especially those that are related to our work as midwives.

It seems to me that the Anatomy in general is interesting, but, is more important for our as future midwives the contents of the pelvis and perineum, because it is in these parts where we will focus our future work.

I believe the easiest of the class were the practical steps of the subject, because they were most educational and entertaining. And the most difficult contents of the classes in my opinion was neuroanatomy and everything that has to do with the nervous system, because it is a very complex topic with a lot of different concepts to learn.

The class was teached by many teachers, each of them teaching a specific subject. Among the teachers I remember are: Dr.René Letelier, Heras and Dr.Ernesto Alvaro Vega, because their classes were very funny and learned a lot in them.

Finally my marks in this subject although were not the best, at least reflected the time devoted to this subject, however, rather than the notes, what I liked most was how much I learned and what fun it is this branch.

a little about me . . .

Hi! My name is Daniela Fredes and my nickname is "nani". I'm nineteen years old and study Obstetric and Puericulture in the University of Chile. I live with my parents and my sister in Maipú.

The objetives that I expect to achieve are principally to finish my career and speciallize in Neonatology, to take care of the babies and to be able to be the more complete professional, and to practice my profession of the best form possible to help to persons and specially the mothers and her children.

My experience with the earthquake lucky was not very bad or traumate, because I was in Algarrobo, and in that place it was not very strong as in Santiago or in Concepción, and was really important that all my family stay with me in this moment.

As a future Midwife I could go to help to the persons more affected with the earthquake and can go to south for help and to give care to who needs.
